Meet-the-Artists: Roman Wilhelm [Closed]

Everybody who knows Cantonese should learn that the character “香” means “fragrance”, and “香港” means “fragrant harbor”. Everybody also knows that there are two ways to spell these characters in Chinese – the local Cantonese way (heung1 gong2) and the less local Mandarin way (xiāng gǎng). Cantonese is more than just a dialect, it represents many generations of independent cultural development. “香” also means death, fragrance can change depending how you use it. In his field research as a visiting artist of the Hong Kong Baptist University Academy of Visual Arts, German visual communication designer Roman Wilhelm is trying refer to the idea of local dialect as an audio-visual phenomenon, to show the versatility of local culture in the exhibition of “HEUNG!”. Roman Wilhelm
Roman studied visual communication at the Burg Giebichenstein Academy of Art and Design Halle (Saale) in Germany, where he now teaches hand lettering. Wilhelm studied under Professor Fred Smeijers for a typeface design master’s degree at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. Besides working for Berlin-Beijing-based studio INSIDE A Communications, he was a member of the Multilingual Typography Research Group at the Haute Ecole d’Art et de Design Geneva from 2008–2013. A fluent Chinese speaker, his work focuses on cross-cultural mediation, Chinese-Western bilingual typography and typeface design issues. A frequent visitor of Asia, he has taught at various academies such as the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (School of Design), as well as the Seoul National University (College of Fine Art).
