ArTram In Motion Bringing Arts to the Community
29 Jul
ArTrams In Motion! Four trams carrying the artistic creation of arts ambassadors on their exteriors are in service from today onwards, bringing arts closer to the everyday life of the general public.

To inspire the creativity of the arts ambassadors and to promote the spirit of sharing among students, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and Hong Kong Tramways Limited jointly organise the "ArTram: Fantasy Playground Design Competition". By getting students to create visual artworks, their creativity and imagination will be kindled. The winning works are featured on the exteriors of four ArTrams. The ArTrams will travel around Hong Kong Island for a month.

The ArTram Kick-off Ceremony was held on 28 July at the Whitty Street Tram Depot. It was officiated by Mr Ko Tin-lung, Chairman of ADC's Arts Promotion Committee and Mr Tsang Wing-hang, Deputy Managing Director of Hong Kong Tramways Limited. Also joining the ceremony were Mr Wong Kwok-choi, Kacey, visual artist and member of the assessment panel of the competition and some of the awarded arts ambassadors. During the occasion, the arts ambassadors introduced their design concept and artwork.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Ko Tin-lung said, “This activity encouraged students to involve in group artistic creation and foster team spirit. The winning works are featured on the exteriors of ArTrams, bringing arts to the community and at the same time, allowing public to appreciate the creativity of arts ambassadors.”

The competition, categorised into primary and secondary school divisions, was inundated with entries from 247 schools. Led by the arts ambassador of each participating school, students work together on their creations with the theme “New Toys of Old” or “Original Playground”.

To ignite students’ creativity and broaden their vision, visual artist Wong Kwok-choi, Kacey, animation artist Kongkee and young illustrator Rainbow Leung were invited to be the arts advisors and to host a pre-competition seminar for the competing teams. Also acting as the assessment panelists, the three arts advisors praised the efforts of the participating students and commended their works which were able to resonate with the lifestyle and culture of our times. The ArTram: Fantasy Playground Design Competition is one of the major events of the 3rd Arts Ambassadors-in-School Scheme. Organised by the ADC, the Scheme recognises students with artistic excellence and enthusiasm and encourages them to contribute their arts talents to the community. This year, the response is overwhelming with a total of 656 students from different primary, secondary and special schools enrolled as arts ambassadors. Over the past few months, they participated in arts activities including creative arts workshops, Theatre Magic, Recognition Ceremony and sharing of arts experience in television, radio programme and newspapers.

The winning artworks will also be displayed at K11 Art Mall in Tsim Sha Tsui in mid September for public appreciation.
